Hasbro Marvel Legends X-Men ’97 X-Cutioner Review

Once, he was a Cutioner. Now he’s an X-Cutioner.

I have X-Cutioner’s figure from the five inch line. At the time, I didn’t know who he was, but that was a running theme with characters like Comm-Cast and Killspree. X-fever was running rampant, and it didn’t take much to get a figure. I ended up retroactively picking up a comic that featured X-Cutioner at my comic shop. I can’t remember if it was good or bad, if his appearance was disappointing or not. It’s been…quite a while.

But it didn’t matter. The toy was cool. The design was cool. He had attitude.

Luckily, this toy does too.

I haven’t watched the two episodes of X-Men ’97 that have gone up as of this writing yet, but X-cutioner makes an appearance in at least one of them, or so I’ve heard. I was shocked enough that he was getting a toy, but now he’s in a cartoon? The 90s really are back.

The design is slightly different, but this is undeniably X-Cutioner, a name that is growing more and more annoying to write out. Due to the nature of the design, there are some hinderances to the figure, but it moves a lot better than it would appear at first glance. The jacket parts have a decent enough flex to them so he can move his legs enough to get into wide legged poses. There’s no torso articulation, but the ball-joint at his waist works enough to take up the slack. His head gets some decent rage as well.

Basically, they’ve done what they can to work around what might otherwise have been a restrictive figure.

He comes with two staffs, and a gun. Not pictured is a clear plastic sleeve that goes on the end of the gun. Like many, I thought it was there to keep the barrel of the gun straight, even though that felt like way more work than we should have expected. As it turns out, it’s supposed to be a part of the gun. Luckily, I didn’t throw it away, Like I said, I haven’t seen the show, so I’m going on hearsay.

The two staff sections attach to the gun, which attaches to his back. I have the rifle facing barrel up in the pictures, but I think it should be the other way around.

He can hold the rifle, but it is a tad fiddly to stay in his hand. Similarly, only his left hand holds the staff tightly. You can finagle the other staff to stay put in his right, but you have to use the peg. It works…kind of.

Finally, he has a cannon thing that slides on to his arm. I have no context for what it does, other than…cannon stuff. Regardless, it looks cool.

This is a fairly surprising figure to be getting, and it ended up being my most-wanted of the wave, with Magneto’s Big M costume a close second. Overall, I’m not disappointed.
